Ellie is three!

Ellie turned three at the end of March, I realise this is almost a month ago but we have just been so busy!

We decided to have a Gruffalo themed birthday party, with food, drink and party favours based on the Julia Donaldson book.  As always, my research started on Pinterest looking for Gruffalo themed party ideas and set to work making labels, writing out food lists and ordering prizes for pass the parcel.

The party food was mostly based on the story of the Gruffalo; we had a chocolate finger ‘Log pile house’, ‘Roasted fox’ carrot sticks, ‘Scrambled snake’ popcorn and much more!  I was really pleased with the finished look and received quite a few compliments on the effort and detail that we had put into the spread.  The biggest compliments have to have been about our amazing cake.  Once again my Mum, Ellie’s Granny, created a masterpiece and I couldn’t be more grateful…

The cake was a 3D book showing pages from The Gruffalos Child
Each cup cake had a hand painted disc with extracts of the book

I handmade almost 30 little packages of Gruffalo playdough to give out as a little party favour to each child that came.  I was a little nervous that people wouldn’t like this, but was made up when a friend sent me a video of her and her son making a Gruffalo out of their little playdough set later that afternoon.  One piece of advise if you are going to do this…wear gloves, as my hands were a rather interesting colour for the next few days!

We hired a bouncy castle and played pass the parcel, we were going to play pin the poisonous wart on the Gruffalo’s nose but time ran away with us and the children were having far too much fun eating ‘Owl ice cream’ and playing on the bouncy castle.

I love children’s themed parties and had so much fun (with just a little bit of stress) getting everything ready for Ellie’s third birthday.  I’d love to know what you think!  Have you any hints or tips for creating the party to remember?
